Wexford Racecourse Supporters' Club
Background
When Michael Murphy became Managing Director of Wexford Racecourse he found himself in charge of a racecourse substantially different from the way it is now. Wexford Racecourse was under supported and under resourced. It would not be putting too fine a point on it to say that the outlook was bleak.
Shortly before Michael took over, some friends of Wexford Racecourse came together to see what might be done. The first thing they did was dug deep into their own pockets - a case of putting your money where your mouth is. This was the start of a dynamic fund-raising campaign. It was also the start of Wexford Supporters' Club in 1987. In attendance at that first meeting were Stephen Banville (RIP), Christy Murphy, Alan Cloney, Michael Murphy, Jimmy O'Keeffe and Martin Kent (RIP).
The Supporters' Club had the aims of (1) raising funds to assist the beleaguered racecourse through membership fees, sponsorship and various events (2) attracting more people to the races. They felt that there were many people throughout Wexford who would gladly lend their support to their home track and who would be prepared to do their bit to see it improved. The people who joined back then were very much part of the reason the racecourse managed, not only to keep its head above water, but to build itself up into the fine track we have today.
Supporters meet in the special Supporters' Club Bar on race days. This is conveniently located close to the bookies. Free tea/coffee, delicious sandwiches and cakes are available to members and guests. Whatever about during the races, it is definitely the place to be during the races!
